Canadian Anti-Counterfeiting Network: Annual Program Highlights

CACN members and partners continue to collaborate and share a single, unified voice to advocate for anti-counterfeiting legislative reform and policy development within Canada.

Through initiatives such as the IP Crime Taskforce, written submissions and oral testimony, CACN has established strong ties with the following government regulators and law enforcement agencies: Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), Canadian Heritage, CBSA, RCMP and provincial and regional police services. These initiatives help CACN and its members raise awareness about legislative reforms, best practices and guidelines to support the prevention of counterfeit goods, fraud and copyright piracy in Canada.

Throughout 2019 and continuing in 2020, CACN has been actively involved in organizing several training programs. These include:

Law Enforcement & Customs Training

CACN’s M.E.E.T. (Mitigate, Educate, Enforce, and Train) program offers customs officials at CBSA, law enforcement and government agencies with hands-on training of product identification, legislative updates, case studies and industry best practices. In 2020, M.E.E.T events are being planned for Toronto, Ontario and Edmonton, Alberta.

CACN is also organizing a series of onsite training opportunities at a number of law enforcement agencies and investigation firms across the nation, including the Canadian Police College, Ontario Police College and several municipal police forces across the country.

Our group actively participates in anti-counterfeiting conferences and meetings throughout the year, including the Niagara Police Anti-counterfeiting and Fraud Conference each May and several regional meetings involving the insurance, investigative and brand industries. We will actively participate in other associated conferences throughout the year, including the Canadian Chiefs of Police Conference and the Ontario Crowns Conference.

Partnerships

CACN continues to collaborate with the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition (IACC), the Global Anti-Counterfeiting Group (GACG), the International Trademark Association (INTA), Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), Crime Stoppers, among others, to help support common strategic goals.
